Social Networking

diigo

Social networking sites, like Facebook, enable you to find and socialize with people who have common interests. However, many new web-based tools provide more functionality than just networking. Imagine the ability to collaboratively find, read, and markup web-based resource materials, discuss them, and then share them with others.

Diigo is one of the best free tools to facilitate this type of group research and knowledge sharing. Specifically, Diigo allows you to:

  • Create and share bookmark lists
  • Highlight and share key portions of web pages
  • Add annotations (“sticky notes”) to pages and share with colleagues
  • See other people’s annotations and highlights on any web page
  • Discuss your findings in a discussion forum and provide feedback and commentary on forum contributions
  • Access all Diigo material anywhere from any computer
  • Receive RSS notifications of group activity
  • Create groups and upload course rosters from AIM
  • Discover what others are bookmarking and join other networks with common interests

In addition, Diigo provides:

  • A browser toolbar (available for all major browsers) to easily access Diigo’s functions
  • Personalized content recommendations
  • The ability to share your findings in both Facebook, Twitter, and Del.icio.us
  • The ability to import existing bookmarks from other social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us

For professors, Diigo is great for sharing information within research teams (either on campus or collaboratively with colleagues around the world), running discussions related to web content, and sharing course resources with students. Likewise, students can collaboratively conduct web-based research. And, it’s all in one easy-to-access location.

You can explore Diigo by joining a BYU group on Learning with Web 2.0 applications. Create your free account and then join the group.
