Respondus and StudyMate: Two New Programs for Professors
BYU has recently purchased a campus-wide license for two new software programs: Respondus and SudyMate.
Respondus
The Respondus software provides professors with an additional test-making option. It is a helpful, convenient, and easy tool for creating and managing exams. Exams and assessments can be created using Microsoft Word or directly through the Respondus software.
Respondus is much easier to use than the Test Manager in Blackboard for creating assessments. Respondus assessments are compatible with Blackboard so you can create an exam using Respondus and then upload it to your Blackboard course.
There are 15 question types as well as options to include graphic, audio, and video files. Questions that have previously been created in Microsoft Word can be imported.
Other features include:
- A simple user interface
- Spell check
- Mathematical and scientific symbols capabilities
- Links to outside multimedia content
- An option to preview before publishing

StudyMate
StudyMate is a companion program to Respondus that BYU has also licensed for faculty to use. It allows professors to take questions from Microsoft Word or from Respondus files and create interactive learning activities and games that help students study class materials. Templates simplify the creation process.
Some of the activities include:
- Fact cards
- Matching
- Challenge (similar to Jeopardy)
- Flash cards
- Quizzes
Other benefits of StudyMate:
- Content can be imported from Microsoft Word
- Activities can be uploaded into Blackboard
- Activities can be used on iPods
- Graphics can be inserted
- Mathematical and scientific symbols can be inserted
- Publisher test banks can be used
- Questions and answers can be randomized
