Consultations on Teaching

Teaching & Learning Consultants
The Center’s Teaching & Learning Consultants are available to visit your class and provide feedback as a starting place for assessment and consultation services. They can also help you plan your course, create effective learning outcomes, and do a host of other things to enhance teaching and learning in your classroom. To inquire about a teaching consultation, contact your Teaching & Learning Consultant.

Students Consulting on Teaching (SCOT)
SCOT is a confidential program dedicated to quality education at BYU and to providing faculty members with feedback that helps them gain a better sense of what is going on in their courses and classrooms. SCOTs are carefully selected BYU students who are interested in the teaching and learning process. They have been trained by the Center for Teaching & Learning and can serve as excellent resources to instructors, providing valuable data to supplement student evaluations and peer reviews. This program is available to all instructors at the university; faculty members from every college have participated. For more information on the SCOT program, click here.

Teaching Assistant Training
Having effective TAs can significantly enhance the teaching and learning experience for both faculty and students. The Center’s staff can collaborate with departments and programs to establish or improve training programs for TAs. For more information on TA training, contact your Teaching & Learning Consultant.

Consultation on Learning Assessment

The Center for Teaching & Learning’s professional staff is also available to consult with you on assessing student learning (e.g., exams, assignments, projects, etc.). Consultations could include evaluating current assessments, helping you decide what types of assessments are appropriate for your learning outcomes, developing criteria for assessments, and other feedback and guidance on the assessment of student learning. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact your Teaching & Learning Consultant.

Consultation on Evaluation of Teaching

The Teaching & Learning Consultants can help you evaluate your teaching effectiveness through support in several areas: student ratings, mid-course evaluations, and peer-review of teaching.

Student Ratings
Student ratings are one way to gather data about teaching effectiveness. In large classes, reviewing all the available information may seem daunting. CTL can help you analyze your student ratings which in turn can help guide your future teaching efforts.

Mid-Course Evaluations
Mid-course evaluations are an effective way to evaluate and improve a course while the current students can still benefit from the changes. CTL can help you design, deliver and analyze a mid-course evaluation for your course.

Peer-Review of Teaching
Center personnel can help departments and programs establish or improve the process of peer-review of teaching.
