Inspire is a publication of the BYU Center for Teaching & Learning.

What matters most, as you and I try to help our students, will not be so much whether they master a particular subject or pass our exam. That will matter some, but what will matter most is what they learn from us about who they really are and what they can really become. My guess is that they won’t learn it so much from lectures. They will get it from feelings of who you are, who you think they are, and what you think they might become.

Elder Henry B. Eyring
“Teaching is a Moral Act,” 1991
(Address given at the annual University Conference, Brigham Young University, August 1991)

My favorite and most influential professors have stated that they are “tickled pink” to help their students develop ideas, research, or revise assignments. They were clearly not interested in grades, but rather in how much I learned and grew in their class. I could tell they wanted to help and that they were looking for my best effort, rather than flawless work.

BYU Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL)

The Brigham Young University Center for Teaching & Learning is dedicated to improving student learning in the context of the aims of a BYU education. The center was announced in May 2007 by Academic Vice President John Tanner. It was formed by combining staff from the former Center for Instructional Design and from the Faculty Center.
